Rock lobster tagging
The New Zealand Rock Lobster Industry Council coordinates and manages an extensive rock lobster stock monitoring programme. It includes intensive catch sampling, vessel logbooks, and lobster tag and release and recapture projects e.g. TagTracker. Stock monitoring coverage extends from North Cape to Stewart Island on a rotational basis. Information collected is delivered to the Ministry of Fisheries research database for use in stock assessments and annual Total Allowable Catch and sustainability decisions.

The Rock Lobster Industry Council contracts database management to NIWA and to Trophia Research Ltd.  All stock monitoring is conducted in accordance with Ministry of Fisheries standards and specifications and data is regularly reviewed by the Ministry of Fisheries Stock Assessment Working Group.
